Shilo שילה
Name
Shilo was originally a Canaanite city in the heart of what became the Nachala of Ephraim.
Location
- Shiloh was centrally located in the Land of Israel, in the inheritance of the Tribe of Ephraim, described in the Bible as"Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah” [3].
- Onomasticon of Eusebius (fourth century A.D.) places Shiloh “ … twelve miles [from Neapolis (Shechem)] at Acrabitene,” that is, in the district named after the city whose name is still preserved in the name of the Arab village of Aqraba, northeast of Shiloh.

- Joshua ben Nun made Shilo his headquarters during the years of conquest.
- It was in Shilo that the Mishchan was brought after Gilgal after which Shiloh became a religious center and an Assembly-place for the tribes, and the Mishchan (Sanctuary) stood at Shilo for 390 years between the conquest of the land and the establishment of the Mikdash (Temple) [1].
- Elchanan brought his family to make Aliyah L'Regel at Shilo.
- Channa prayed for a child whom she dedicated to serving HaShem at Shilo.
- Eli and his sons served HaShem the Mishchan in Shiloh[2].
- In the midst of a war against the Philistines at Ebenezer the Ark of the Covenant was brought from Shiloh into the battlefield and fell into the hands of the enemy [4].
- Shmuel, the first of the Judges, served HaShem under Eli at the Mishchan in Shilo.
- Achiah, who prophesied that he would rule over the ten tribes, came from Shiloh [5].
- When the Jews returned from Babylon, the men of Shiloh were among them [6].
